What is Image Alt Text?
Alt text is the short text alternative used when an image cannot be seen - what screen readers read out and what image search uses as context.
Why it matters
Screen readers and search engines rely on alt text. Missing or generic alt text hides your images from blind visitors and loses image-search context.
Common problems
- Images with no alt at all
- Alt text that is just a file name or the word “image”
- The same alt text copied across many images
- Keyword-stuffed alt text
How to fix them
Work through the report from the top: write the missing alt text first, replace weak or duplicated descriptions, then give linked images and icon buttons names that say where they go or what they do. Purely decorative images can keep alt="".
Example
Example: 42 images scanned · 25 good · 6 to review · 5 missing alt - results are grouped into errors, warnings and passed, and every image shows its current alt text, a suggestion, why it matters and the exact code to use.
FAQ
What exactly does it check?
Results are grouped into errors, warnings and passed. It checks missing alt, empty alt on images that look meaningful, alt copied from the file name, generic or too-short alt, alt that is too long, keyword stuffing, duplicate alt across images, likely decorative images, linked images, images that may contain visible text, image buttons and icons without names, logos, alt text that repeats the caption or does not match the page language, SVGs and CSS background images.
Do all images need alt text?
Meaningful images should. Purely decorative images can use empty alt="" - the checker tells the two apart.
Does alt text guarantee image SEO?
No — it helps accessibility and context; rankings are not guaranteed.
Is it free?
Yes.
